Photos of Old Niagara

The Town of Niagara or Niagara-on-the-Lake has a rich and varied history steeped with mystery and intrigue.

However the only intrigue here is to enjoy the photos and perhaps you may see yourself or a relative and wish to comment. (:-)

All of these photos are from the collection of James Smith, a Niagara native.

Jamboree 1955

[Note: to be tidied up later - cp]
Remember that fabulous summer of 1955 when the International World Jamboree was held right here in Niagara, and who didn't take pictures?

The first five pictures taken on Queen Street came from the collection of Doug Summers.

In picture one look at the sign in the background that says, Deep freeze, remember when, Lloyd Miller had his furniture store in there, before it was Warren Plumbing and Heating and the License
bureau.

Picture two was taken in front of Harry Steele's barber shop, now the Stage Coach Restaurant.

Picture three, that's Doug Summers with
two scouts in front of the Niagara Advance Printing office, now Just Christmas store.

Picture four looks like two scouts from India standing in front of Bill Zoeger's newly opened store.

Picture five, some boys getting signatures from scouts while in front of, Linell Magders, Family
Store, west corner Queen and Regent.

Next picture is the official Canada Post stamp issued in recognition of this occasion.

Picture seven is a day pass given out each day for admittance to the Jamboree grounds, they were free.

Picture eight, I can't remember what this was from, but the item is in my collection -----somewhere. ----Jim

Here are a few more pictures taken during the 1955
Jamboree. I like these pictures because they show Queen Street the way it was.

Picture one was taken from a telephone pole by Mr. Howse, looking toward Greaves Jams, notice our old Police car.

Notice in picture two the sign by the tree, Reserved for Police Only, the police station was in the Court House, also notice all the big trees.

In picture three I recognize Mr. and Mrs. Brunton, also notice the sign which reads, Millers Home Appliances, which became Warren Plumbing and Heating.

Picture four shows a dignitary heading for the Court House steps.

Picture five, the dignitary speaks, who is that little boy with the hat on ?

Last, I found out what that picture was from that I sent
last week, it's an envelope, this one address to my brother Don, with four stamps.

Picture one was taken at the corner of Wellington and Picton, what is now Shaws Corner. Notice our Scout Lodge in the background which is now the entrance to the Shaw Festival Theater.

The second picture is a birds eye view of all the tents set up for the Jamboree. At the top left of the picture is Fort Niagara, at the top center in the dark trees you can see the steeple to St.Vincent De Paul Church.

Picture three shows a tower set up at the entrance to the Jamboree, the Niagara Ambulance garage is now at this location. The Jamboree left the steele tower in place after it was over and it stood there for many years. In 1960 I took my little Brownie 127 and climbed to the top of the tower. The next three picture are those I took from that vantage point

Picture four is looking down Picton street with the Niagara Hospital and St.Vincent De Paul Church on the right. Notice all the trees, on the left is where are Scout Lodge was and the Shaw Festival Theater is today.
4 a view in 1960 from the flage pole.jpg

Picture five is looking over the commons toward the Oak Grove. Notice they have burnt the grass on the commons.
5 A view of Commons from flagpole.jpg

The last picture I took looking straight down at my shoes.

The tower was removed in the late 60s or 70s and moved to the new Scout Lodge near Butlers Barracks.

You wouldn't have caught me up there Jim! I have had height phobia which is now to a large extent cured after driving mountain highways in Colorado with NO guardrails and hundreds or thousands of feet to drop down the side of the mountain from the road.
